Luke Brouwer

Counselor

As a counselor with First Step, Luke is passionate about working with individuals, couples, and families who are struggling with mental health challenges, broken relationships, and addiction. With a background in both counseling and theology, he strives to bring clinical insight shaped by a Biblical worldview to each counseling relationship.

Luke earned both a Master of Counseling and a Master of Divinity from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. After graduating, he stayed in St. Louis, serving in various ministry and counseling roles. He spent seven years in private practice, during which he also directed a ministry for Christians grappling with sexual brokenness and addiction. In addition to his private practice, he took on several contract roles, addressing issues such as adolescent homelessness and providing counseling and assessments for clergy at a local seminary.

In 2014, Luke and his wife, Julie, moved to Haiti to serve as Country Directors for Hope Community Project. While they have been based in Augusta for the past several years, they continue in this role today.

Luke and Julie have four children. Three of their children are still at home with them in downtown Augusta, while their eldest is married and serving in the Navy. Their fourth child, who was adopted from Haiti and has special needs, provides Luke with unique insight into the beauty and brokenness faced by adoptive families and the special needs community.

Luke enjoys reading historical fiction, all things Haiti, and riding motorcycles.
